Why Very Long (Tape Worm) Web Sites Are Wrong

Extra Long Web Pages - This is what I call a TAPE WORM. And you know what tape worms do? They eat up everything.

Many of these so called web sites that have one page, maybe 2 pages, but they are longer than your arm times 100. These sites are what most web experts consider terrible web sites. Most of these pages often have a great deal of Hype.

By most web experts state that these long web pages are really bad, since most people do not have the patience to keep scrolling down and down and down.

If they do have the stamina to go all the way to the bottom you are really frustrated and possibly don't care any more.

I have read many of these pages and these guys that have these web sites are always claiming to make $10,000 to $50,000 each and every week with a fool proof system, but they won't tell you what the actual system is. They state just enough to try to gain your attention, but after you scroll down about 20 yards worth (which is equal to 3 to 4 pages), most people get very bored with the whole thing and exit out.

I am not sure how they do that since most people will not stay long enough to find out what message they are getting across. They all claim that they are making big dollars with their system. The biggest thing that many people have come to believe is that most of these pages are scams of some form. So I always recommend to stay away from creating a TAPE WORM web sites.

You can create several pages with tabs (or links) to accomplish the same thing. If the reader wants to read the testimonials, cost (which is always at the bottom), or any other information, the reader will click on that tab. You will get the same thing accomplished with a happier reader. I am not saying that there are viruses on these sites, even though the length feels like a virus, but from a Marketing standpoint, you will lose more people than you will attract.

If you design a good web site and have links to the testimonials, and the other parts of the information I know that more people will stick around. I have heard one guy state that if they have multiple pages on their site the search engine gets confused and doesn't know which page to link the customers to. I have not found this to be true. The search engine goes out an looks for all pages in a site. In fact I just discovered, when I typed my domain name in the search in Google, it came up with a news letter that I created for a non profit organizations web site. So the search engines will see you no matter how many pages you put up on your site.

Even sites like Microsoft.com does not have long pages, and they do get their point across to people. One of the longest professionally done sites I have seen this the Wall street Journal. This online newspaper does have a very long web site, just like their actual newspaper, but they have a ton of content to post every day.

But the Wall Street Journal is not what I call a TAPEWORM.

My best recommendation is to keep your pages no longer than 1 to 2 pages long.

A page is what you can see on your screen without a whole lot of scrolling.

You will keep more readers that you have worked hard to attract and keep them there to possibly become one of your customers.
